Other studies have suggested possible links to other cancers, including prostate , bladder , and ovarian cancer. But not all studies found such links, and more research is needed to clarify these findings. In most cases, the American Cancer Society does not determine if something causes cancer that is, if it is a carcinogen.

Instead, we look to other respected organizations that classify potentially cancer-causing exposures. One of its goals is to identify causes of cancer. The long-term effects of PFOA and similar chemicals are largely unknown, but there has been enough concern to prompt an attempt to phase out industrial emissions of them.

PFOA and some closely related chemicals such as PFOS are now no longer made in the US, although they are still made in some other countries and could potentially reach US consumers in certain types of products. In addition, many other PFAS are now in use, and new ones are still being developed. These advisories are not legally enforceable federal standards. They are meant to provide drinking water system operators, as well as state and other agencies who are responsible for overseeing these systems, with information on the health risks of these chemicals, so they can take appropriate actions to protect their residents.

Other than the possible risk of flu-like symptoms from breathing in fumes from an overheated Teflon-coated pan, there are no proven risks to humans from using cookware coated with Teflon or other non-stick surfaces.

Because the routes by which people may be exposed to PFOA are not known, it is unclear what steps people might take to reduce their exposure. People can be exposed to these compounds if they drink contaminated water or they eat contaminated food. These contaminants can get in the food as a result of the packaging containing them or because the crops which are used to produce the foods were contaminated by the PFOs and PFOA found in the soil.

Those who work in an industrial facility where PFOs or PFOA are deployed, have higher contamination risks because the level of toxicity they may be exposed to is elevated. PFOs and PFOA end up in the environment when they are produced or as a consequence of being used by consumers or industries. Most commonly, these compounds can be found in the environment because they are released by industrial facilities or used in agriculture.

Large manufacturers often discharged significant amounts of chemicals in the environment which harms both the air and the soil quality. Because these compounds are present in the soil, they also contaminate the water which leads to greater health risk for the general public. The compounds migrate from the soil into the ground and surface water and from there to the public and private water supplies.

Even if measures are taken to eliminate the exposure in drinking water, contamination will still continue due to these chemicals' great resistance and the fact that they are perpetually formed due to precursors. One of the most common sources of exposure to PFOA is water. To provide a margin of protection, the EPA has established a set of health advisories for these chemical compounds. Serum PFOA levels generally reflect exposure that has occurred over several years.

Biomonitoring studies on levels of PFOA provide physicians and public health officials with reference values so that they can determine whether people have been exposed to higher levels of PFOA than are found in the general population.
