In the late s, it completed several new submarines of the third generation Oscar II. Three have been decommissioned and one, the Kursk, sank. The Pacific Fleet is set to upgrade four Oscar II submarines with 3M Kalibr family of cruise missiles by as part of a multi-year programme. The submarines can also be fitted with other cruise missiles, including 3M anti-ship, 3M land-attack missiles, and PT91 anti-submarine warfare ASW torpedoes.
Oscar II submarines have a length of m, depth of m and a displacement of 24,t. Each submarine has the capacity to accommodate a total of crew members.
Designed to deliver missile blows on groups of ships and coastal installations, the submarine constitutes an updated version of Project with one additional compartment to improve the inner arrangement of the armament and equipment.
The Oscar II is a double-hulled design and is divided into ten major compartments. The reinforced rounded cover of the sail is intended to break through the ice of the Artic ice cap. The two periscopes, radio-sextant and radar masts are located within the retractable devices area. The HF and UHF radio-masts, radio direction-finder masts and satellite communication and navigation masts are located on the airshaft to feed compressors. The submarine is fitted with a floating antenna buoy to receive radio messages, target designation data and satellite navigation signals at a great depth and under the ice.
The bow horizontal hydroplanes are retracted into the hull. The main mechanisms have modular design and two-cascade shock-absorbing system. The Antey -class submarines were one such solution. The Oscar IIs were feet long with a beam of nearly 60 feet and displaced 19, tons, twice as much as a destroyer. To keep up with American nuclear-powered carriers, the Soviet subs were each powered by two OK nuclear reactors that together provided 97, shipboard horsepower. Such power gave them a top speed of 33 knots underwater. The Oscar IIs were big because they carried big missiles. Each submarine carried 24 P Granit missiles, which themselves were each the size of a small plane—33 feet long and weighing 15, lbs.
The missiles had a top speed of Mach 1. A Granit could carry a 1,lb. The Kursk was completed in and assigned to the Russian Northern Fleet. On August 15, the Kursk was involved in a major fleet exercise, along with the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov and battlecruiser Pyotr Velikity.
Kursk was fully armed with Granit missiles and torpedoes and was to make a simulated attack on Kuznetsov. At AM local time, an underwater explosion rocked the exercise area, followed two minutes later by an even larger explosion.
