Any suggestions. Jun 06, Rating Quail eggs by: Karen Our nest of 18 eggs didn't fare too well! We were too late at saving them.
Mom paced nearby and we had several Road Runners nearby. Think they had gotten a few individual eggs along the way. Had noticed that the count was down a few days earlier. I was initially upset that I wasn't able to protect them think they were ready to hatch but then remembered the laws of nature. My question is how do both snakes and roadrunners know where the eggs are? Has been an interesting adventure. Yes the male is probably hanging around out of sight. They never venture too far from the female while she is incubating!
I am surprised you can't hear him hollering. They usually sit atop something from a distance and watch. When the babies are ready to leave the nest.. And they know who their mom and dad is!! They are so adorable when they are little tiny things..
Best wishes for your Quail family's success! Jun 04, Rating I Have a Quail Nest Too by: Barbara My quail nest has 15 eggs and is about 3 ft off the ground in one of my plant pots on the patio. It is right outside one of my great room windows, so we can check on mom several times a day.
She has been on the eggs for 18 days that we know for sure, possibly a little longer. Does anyone know if the father bird usually hangs around before the eggs hatch? I'm worried that Mom is sitting on eggs that might not hatch if there is no Dad bird in the picture.
We saw a pair of quail on the patio several days before I noticed the eggs, but haven't seen the male bird for more than two weeks. I share your concern. How deep is the planter from the dirt up? Are there sides around the planter at least a foot high? If that's the case.. Keep an eye on them. When they are running around the planter they are probably ready to go with the parents. Is there a way at that point that you can set the planter on the ground, when they are ready? Without knowing what your planter is like it is hard to say.
What about placing some Lawn chair cushions around and underneath the planter.. I know it is very important to gather them all together at once.. Somewhere in the open but preferably near a bush.. I've not heard of Quail, laying eggs so far apart. Its usually only a few days till all are layed. As the babies are all the same age when ready to go. I think it was fourteen days for the incubation. And WOW eighteen!!! Lets hope they all make it. My planter is a blockwall about 3 feet high on one side and then an additional two foot wall paralleling it, closing off at the corners.
The dirt for my flowers lay about a foot deep into the two walls. Snakes haven't gotten in there yet.. They were very well hid under a Rosemary bush that sets one on either end of the planter. Try Cushions! Wish you all the luck! May 05, Rating Gamble's Quail Nesting by: Karen We have 18 gambel's quail eggs in our planter right next to our front door.
The planter is at least 3 feet off the ground and if they hatch before the snakes find them, we too are concerned they will plunge to their death. Would placing towels on the ground around the pot help? We have a question about the length of this nesting. She laid an egg a day and this took about 2 weeks. The last 3 days she is staying in the pot on the eggs most of the night and part of the day; how much longer?
Sure will be exciting to partake in these births! A foot and a half off the ground probably wont hurt them.
When they are ready.. That allows you to release all at once that that they all can see where mom or dad are going, and follow at the same time. Any stragglers will be vulnerable to predators. We did have to touch them to catch them and get them in the box. When they are running around the planter, they should be ready. And shouldn't stay in there to long after, or they will do without food.
Best wishes to you! Apr 22, Rating This is my life!! My mom nested in my lettuce planter which is about a foot and a half off of the ground. I am so worried that the eggs will hatch when I'm not around and they will plunge to their death. I am hoping to help them down, but I'm not sure how to go about it. Why did you use the box? Is it bad to touch them? My original plan was just to put them on the ground with my hands. Is this not good?
I am also worried because we have had an unexpected cold snap and it was raining on my planter and I ended up putting a tarp over the eggs, which mom didn't like. Trying to get up to the food. Made it to the food and water! The Three Amigos about 5 wks old. Jun 10, Rating Advice needed please by: Heidi We have a mama quail that laid her first egg on May 1st and within several days laid 6 additional.
She did leave her nest for over 24 hours in the beginning but has been sitting on the seven eggs in a pot near our front door since approximately May 6, She leaves every once in a while but keeps coming back. It's June 10th today. Is there still a chance that her eggs will hatch at this point?? Apr 26, Rating Answering your question about abandoned babies. The parents lead them. Those that can't follow are left to die.
The parents will usually wait for a long time, however. If there are lots of babies in the area, mom and dad are probably on the other side of a wall or searching for a way to keep the covey on the move. Leave the babies alone. If they are still there the next day, you could have an abandonment issue. May 18, Rating Will mama come back? I have no idea where they came from, I've seen no sign of mama or a nest. My dogs caught 3 of them and unfortunately killed them before I could save them.

I disrupted the nest by: Pilar I was cleaning out a flower bed that was very densely full of foliage with a rake and all of a sudden a quail went shooting up and out.
There were also a few baby quail running around as well as a bunch of eggs still in the nest. I had gloves on so I gently picked up the eggs and the baby quail and put them back in the nest. I could hear the momma loudly so I walked away to give her room and security to return. She hopped back down to them, but later when I went to check on them she was not on the nest. She was sitting about 10' away from the nest in a corner of the flower bed. I got close and she stood up and out ran a bunch of babies.
I am worried for two reasons and am looking for help. No foliage over them like there was on the nest before I raked it off 2 - I am worried that the eggs in the nest are not being sat on by the momma now that she is in the corner.
Should I go out there and gently move the nest over to her in the corner? I feel terrible! Jul 25, Rating. Missing nest by: Anonymous I had a quails nest in my 4' high tomato planter that had 13 eggs in them.

When I went to water them, a bird flew out from one of them. I discovered 12 eggs and one broken egg, lightly speckled. I had watered the flowers and got them wet, but the mother keeps coming back to sit on them. Will they be okay since I got them wet? The water from the hose is warm due to the high temps.

Young: Downy young leave nest within a day after hatching. Both parents tend young, with female often brooding them when small, male perching high and acting as sentinel; young feed themselves. Young can fly short distances at age of 10 days but are not full grown until later. One brood per year, two in years with good food supply.
Downy young leave nest within a day after hatching. Mostly seeds and leaves. Feeds on a wide variety of plants, but especially annual weeds, eating the seeds, leaves, and fresh shoots.
Also eats acorns, berries, flowers, bulbs, insects. During breeding season, males call loudly to advertise territory. In courtship, male postures with wings drooped, tail spread; bobs head, and may rush at female. Nest site is usually on ground, under a shrub or brushpile, or next to a log or other cover.
Sometimes nests above ground, on broken-off branch or in old nest of another bird. Typical nest on ground probably built by female is a shallow depression, lined with grass and leaves. The same climate change-driven threats that put birds at risk will affect other wildlife and people, too.
Most quail species make their nests on the ground under dense cover, scratching out depressions under tall grasses, up against rocks, or under scrub brush. Quail have many predators including fox, opossum, raccoons, hawks, owls, and snakes.
They are also popular game birds for human hunters. Therefore, no matter how much they try to hide under dense cover, they still face a high mortality rate. The fact that they regularly produce large clutches is an evolutionary response to that imbalance. A study led by vision scientist George Lovell at the universities of St. Andrews and Abertay in Scotland, however, found that quail make an even greater effort to protect their unborn young.
The scientists observed that the quail they raised in controlled environments appeared to produce eggs distinctly different from one another. Whereas one female might produce eggs with consistently large dark splotches, another would produce lightly flecked eggs. They wondered if the birds would make choices where to lay their eggs based on the appearance of their eggs. In the study, the scientists purchased various colored sands from an aquarium and set them on trays in the aviary enclosures.
They observed that in most cases, the females chose to lay their eggs on sands that best camouflaged them. This practice, known in the wild as disruptive coloration, enables birds to protect their eggs by disrupting their visual outline. There are two types of baby birds—altricial and precocial. Altricial chicks are typically born with closed eyes and without feathers and are much more dependent on their parents for sustenance in their early days.
However, after birth, their development ramps up quickly. Quail chicks, like ducks, shorebirds, geese, pheasants, grouse, and others, are of the precocial type. They avoid heat stress by resting in the shade during the hottest part of the day.
Quail must either drink water daily or obtain it from their food. They can eat insects and succulent fruits of cacti to get this water.
Quail also eat seeds and plants. They roost in bushes and low dense trees. Masked Bobwhite forage in flocks coveys , except during breeding season; they sometimes move up into shrubs and vines to forage on berries and leaves. Quail are gregarious birds. In the fall and winter they often live in coveys of 20 or more individuals, but they pair off during the nesting period. They spend a lot of time on the ground in brushy areas, usually running across hot or open areas to cover.
They fly short distances when startled or to avoid predators. The female incubates the eggs for 21 to 24 days.
