No risk whatsoever. I put mine in the DMZ since day 1 and have never had a problem. It's secure. Those " issues " are largely bogus. So don't let that stop you doing it and having a pleasurable gaming experience as a result. Saying Thanks:. Rapham0n January 22nd, January 17th, , PM 3.
I am in the IT networking field. Sheer driving Pleasure. A Computer 3. A Wireless router 4. First you should know what "DMZ" is and what does it do?
DMZ has its risks! First you need to assign your ps3 a static ip address to do this perform the following steps:- 1. Select "Scan" after that select your connection and type in you security key 5. Select "Manual" on IP Address setting 6. Type the default router IP in your PS3. You should then turn off everything running on your home network.
PS3, PC, Router etc. This is solely to make sure that the changes are applied as soon as possible. This should fix all of the problems as listed earlier in this guide, and probably some other issues. If you do need any help then when you post, along your with problem could your also give some more details.

Pepp77 , Jan 5, Great job on the guide, Ive been trying to find out how to get my ps3 into a static ip for weeks now because whenever i try to port forward the thing i have to reset the router and then the ps3 changes its ip I can't get the PS3 to connect to the internet when following these steps. I have an ehome router and applied the DMZ settings to it. Could this be what is messing up the connection?
It says it cannot connect to the server DNS Error I don't have any security on the network so I don't think that is the problem.
For testing purposes change your PS3 network settings from manual to easy. If it can then connect you know you have entered something wrong previously. Once on easy and if it connects go to the network settings and make a note of the details the connection has been given do any differ from what you entered manually? Pepp77 , Jan 6, This is a very good tutoirial NinReznor but i found another way to get past the router internet problems is to make sure you have your PC,laptop or anything simmilar turned of,i was having the problem where i had nat 3 and no upnp,so i turned my PC of and did a network connection test on my PS3 and i now have nat 2 and upnp.
That said, I didn't notice any improvements on my ps3 by putting on DMZ or by portforwading any of those recommend ports, the only time I ever notice improvements when it's done in personal computer and if you use a lot of p2p programs like torrent clients.
Divine Assault, Ether Strike! User Info: bungiefan. Port forwarding is needed if uPnP doesn't work properly with the device, which I have run into from time to time. DMZ is a bad thing to do because whatever device in the DMZ has an attack surface of tens of thousands of ports, and if it is vulnerable then a security breach on that device exposes everything on your network.
DMZ is a huge security vulnerability. More devices are better about uPnP nowadays, but it isn't always enabled depending on the firewall device on the network and the preference of the network admin. If something runs on your PS3 that answers and allows people to send commands through it, yes. If they can exploit the PS3, they can use it to get into other device son your network because they can see the rest of your network.
A console is less risky than a computer, but still a risk. No, not in theory. The problem is many people set it up wrong and then are vulnerable. You just need to set your PS3 to static ip and write this ip down and make sure DMZ is set for only this ip.
I'm curious though, did you try to just enable upnp on your router, does that not work?
